I love the traditions our family has around Christmas. This weekend the Christstollen was baked. The fragrance of fresh sweet bread wafts through the house. We picked up a tree, brought it in to thaw and watched the branches spread out as they thawed.
Yup, I love the tastes, smells and sounds of our Christmas traditions. What are some of yours?
It’s January 1, 2013 and I’m enjoying the sunshine in our living room. The Christmas tree hasn’t come down yet because none of the needles are falling and my wife wants to hold onto all the Christmas memories for a while yet- our first grandson sitting with us by the tree and the laughter and the Christmas cookies (ok, I’m still eating the Christmas cookies) and the family together.
But its quiet in the house and Abby has come to join me on the couch in the sunshine and we are reflecting on the year that’s just been and I’m smiling with the memories. What fabulous stories I get to hear about as couples become engaged! With the permission of some of my clients, I’d like to share some of those stories from 2012. I know you’ll enjoy them too.
Do you remember when I shared with you the story about the emerald diamonds, the sweet kiss? We delivered the engagement ring to the young man who wanted to get engaged in Hawaii. Well, his plans changed when he got the ring. As he and his girlfriend counted down to Christmas using an advent calendar, she opened the door to December 24 only to find her beautiful ring behind the door. I got a text Christmas eve with this picture and the words, “she said yes”. Isn’t that so cool?
On boxing day, I got another message. They’ve decided to get married in Hawaii, could they have wedding rings by next week? Well, we met in their living room, surrounded by their dogs to go over the design details. The next day, I worked with my goldsmiths… Their rings will be ready in time for them to get on the plane to Hawaii. We don’t do this often, but sometimes what seems to be impossible can be achieved.
My wife and a friend did some cross border shopping this weekend and she came back complaining that she was hearing Christmas carols in the mall ALREADY. “It’s just too early for ‘Dashing through the Snow’”, she complained with dramatic flare, though she begrudgingly acknowledged they had travelled through a blinding snow storm to get there.
The Red Cups are out at Starbucks. That’s a cue guys that we should be starting to think about it.
And us guys dread it.
Christmas is coming when the women are going to look at us expectantly and we fear possible disappointment when they open up the generic mall gift card, toaster oven or pink golf balls which we frantically grabbed Dec. 24 with no time to spare to stand in the gift wrapping lineup.
It doesn’t need to be that way.
Call me. I’ll drop by your office at your convenience. Whatever your budget, we’ll come up with just the right piece for her. Maybe we’ll start with your grandmother’s wedding ring and turn it into a necklace or maybe we’ll start from scratch.
I’ll go away and come back with a design. Once you approve the design, your piece will be made and I can deliver it immediately or hold it until the 24th so she doesn’t “accidently” find it in your underwear drawer. Whatever we do, it will be a spectacular piece of Jewellery that reflects the gift she is to you.
Come Christmas, an elegant red leather Oro de Rey box will be sitting under your tree. You’ve been relaxed. You’ve been smiling every time you think about your gift since our first meeting and your loved one will marvel at the thought that has gone into the preparation of their gift. (and you didn’t even go to the mall!)
