I got a call that the bride wanted to bring her bridesmaids from Regina to Winnipeg for a weekend of fun. She thought it would be the perfect opportunity to meet with me to design her wedding band. So between mani’s and pedi’s, shopping and sauna’s, and her bachelorette party we met to work on it.
I smiled all the way back to Winnipeg.
As high school sweethearts they were inseparable. Lots of time to get to know each others’ characters, likes and dislikes – really seems it was growing up together. Lots of travel through school trips as well as sharing vacations with each others families. University meant they no longer saw each other daily but their hearts continued to grow fonder.
He started planning a year before – even met with me to discuss what kind of engagement ring she might like. But this fall he set it all in motion. We designed this spectacular engagement ring and then he started to set “the romantic event” in motion. You see, their number is 23. First date, special days and events seemed to always fit with “23”.
So on December 23, she followed 23 candles into the room beautifully adorned with 23 dozen red roses, fire blazing both in his heart and the fireplace, soft music playing and … well the rest belongs to their telling.
Of course, she said yes.
Well guess what? That’s next month. Finding that perfect ring is a big deal. It’s that one piece of sparkle planned to be worn forever. It doesn’t have to be difficult or stressful.

We sat in B’s dining room to work on this Re-Creation. She had her mom’s original engagement ring and wedding band and wanted to use them maintaining their original charm. Using the diamonds from B’s engagement ring, we made another perfect matching wedding band.
She wanted some width so we used a wide white gold band setting the three rings into the white gold band.
Mom’s diamonds, her diamonds and some creativity made an exclusive, elegant and meaningful ring that both her daughter and granddaughter will one day cherish.
I’m seeing a growing trend to combine the past with the present in order to create a memory that will be cherished into the future. The thought-full-ness of the jewellery that is shaped into a new treasure is the key to this exclusivity.
For these rings, a daughter used her father’s wedding band and we added the original diamonds from her mother’s engagement ring.
Another generation was included in this next unique ring. Grandmother and mothers’ bands were fused together to be worn by the daughter. Priceless.
Let’s hear this engagement story straight from Jenny.
“Almost 3 years later, after getting a cat, house, and a dog we thought it was time to meet with Oro De Rey for an engagement ring consult. I knew I wanted a different experience rather than going to a regular jewelry store. After learning about Oro De Rey’s services I knew it was the right “fit” for Mike and me.
We met with Gary together back in May to start the process. Prior to our meeting, I had shared ring designs with Gary that I liked best – it was all about the Emerald cut for me!
And then the wait game started … I figured the ring would take a while to make but then June passed, and almost July.
News was being delivered from my friends all around me, people announcing their engagements, baby news, new houses… So I was starting to really wonder where my beautiful engagement ring was!
On July 19th we said we were going to have a pool day. (I bought a kiddie pool that I fill up with water and use for the hot days to dip into while sun tanning)
Mike had to work in the morning but when he got home we had a few beers and were just hanging outside in our “pool” with our pup.
We were both standing in the pool just chit chatting about our night plans. We were going to a Neil Young tribute concert (The Young’uns) where a lot of his family I had not met yet were going to be at. So I said to him, “Well it would be nice to wear my new engagement ring to meet your fam!” He said, “Ya? Okay.”
I must have looked shocked, so he got down on one knee in the pool and proposed.”
We’re glad he did!
They met at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers game in September 2011 in the Rum Hut. Mike and his buddies are hard core Bomber fans and the day Jenny met him, he and his buddies were all in their “Blue Suits” even wearing their spray painted gold shoes. The Bombers were playing the Roughriders this day and it was a big game. Jenny is not a huge football fan but really wanted to go to the game. A friend of hers had an extra ticket but if Jenny wanted to go she would have to go dressed as a Roughrider fan. So Jenny decked out all in Green Machine Gear.
Who’d have thought they’d end up on the same turf?
Come back tomorrow to find out how he proposed.
